Meet Amy Sia, The Designer Behind The Stunning First Edition Wild Flowers Paper Pads

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Amy Sia I'm an Australian born London based textile print design. I studied fashion design at university in Melbourne and worked within the fashion design industry in Melbourne where I grew up. After a few years I moved to London and it was whilst here that I made the switch from fashion to textile print design.

When did you first realise that you had a passion for design?

I always loved art and painting as a child. I remember my favourite activity being drawing flowers and dresses and being excited about all the fluro and neon paints I got to paint with in grade one, so I think I've always loved design!

Which other designers do you look up to?

There are so many talented designers across many mediums! Some of my favourite textile print designers are Helen Dealtry, Juli Sanchez, Nikki Strange and Jess Priest.

What advice would you give to the future generation of designers?

My advice to new designers would be to find your own voice and not give up. Social media has opened up a world of inspiration and it is so easy to discover lots of different designers and see their work which is amazing and fun, the flipside of this is that it is a lot easier to be heavily influenced by other people and also to compare your own career path to other designers. Comparing yourself and copying other people is boring and a bad idea there's only one you so work hard and create your own style that is way more exciting!

Where do you get your inspiration for your designs?

I love to look at the beauty of God's creation, there is so much in nature that is incredibly and endlessly inspiring, from a gorgeous sunset, flowers, animals and bugs just to name a few things! I also love looking to art and fashion and seeing what is on the catwalk, in store, at markets and at exhibitions.

Do you like to craft?

I love a bit of craft! There's something very relaxing about working with your hands I'm not highly skilled though!

What is your favourite Trimcraft collection so far?

I love Tracy Porter's First Edition Kaleidoscope collection it is so colourful, wild and fun!

What trends can we expect to see from you in the future?

I've just come back from Lisbon and there were so many inspiring tiles so I think there's definitely a few tile print designs in the future for me!

Do you have any hobbies?

I enjoy cooking, seeing art exhibitions, trawling flea markets and travelling and a little bit of DIY. At the moment I have been upcycling some furniture, so there has been a bit of spray painting, painting, waxing etc.

If we gave you a million pounds how would you spend it?

I would probably go on a road trip around Europe stopping off at flea markets in search of fun treasures to fill my home with and art supplies, some watercolour brushes, beautiful papers and inks!

Amy's designs are just beautiful. I'd happily tear out the papers in the 12" paper pad and frame them as they are on my wall!
